THIS ISSUE’S book
pick is The Dutch Wife,
by Ellen Keith. It’s
1943 in Amsterdam,
and Marijke de Graaf
and her husband are
sent to different concentration camps.
Marijke must choose
between a sure death
in the labour camp or joining the camp’s
brothel. Her decision is compounded
when she meets SS officer Karl M¨ uller.
Not only is the story moving and
deftly told, but the author’s use of a
second storyline set in late 1970s
Argentina, during
the Argentine Dirty
War, serves to
highlight what people are willing to
do when they have
to fight to surivive.
