Q: Is raspberry ketone for
weight loss fact or fiction?
A: You’ve probably seen ads on TV
or heard from friends and family
claiming that raspberry ketone is a
“miracle fat-burner in a bottle.” But
before you jump on the bandwagon,
consider this information.
As the name suggests, raspberry
ketone is a substance found in rasp-berries; it gives them their smell
and flavour, so it’s often used in
foods and cosmetics for flavouring
and fragrance.
The scientific evidence behind
raspberry ketone as a weight-loss aid
is slim. One of the biggest problems
with existing research is that all the
studies finding potential benefits
were done on animals or in a test
tube—not on people. In other words,
just because a substance looks promising in an animal study or a lab, that
doesn’t mean it will work for people.
Raspberry ketone may have stim-ulant-like side effects such as shaki-ness and heart palpitations for some
individuals. This doesn’t occur with
foods, because they contain only
small amounts.
Although raspberry ketone
sounds like the golden ticket to
weight management, it probably
won’t give you the results you hope
for—and it may not be safe to use in
those higher amounts. The best way
to lose weight remains a healthy lifestyle that includes a well-balanced
