I just turned 21. Yes, I know the picture at the left
shows me looking a bit older. (If it were more current,
I’d look even older.)
the 21 I am talking about is the number of years
I have worked at Costco. that may sound as if I’m one
of the longest-serving employees here, but the truth is
that, when it comes to management, I am something
of a newbie.
this thought was brought home recently with the
retirement of the first executive hired at Costco, dick
diCerchio. As soon as Costco founders jim sinegal and
jeff Brotman obtained their initial round of financing, they called up dick. since that
day in 1983, dick has had key roles at each step of Costco’s journey. He retired as
senior executive vice president. “His stamp is on every major aspect of what Costco
does,” jim said upon dick’s retirement.
Like several other of the founding executives of Costco, dick worked with jim at
two previous companies: Price Club (which merged with Costco in 1993) and
FedMart. In total, the pair worked side by side for 49 years.
this brings me to a point about continuity. Among the many aspects of Costco’s
success, I would put high on the list the fact that not only has the founding manage-
ment team stayed essentially intact for 27 years, but their roots go even deeper. these
are people whose approaches and relationships with one another have stood the test of
time. they are people who can just about finish one another’s sentences, while bring-
ing forth their own thinking.
Far from stifling new thinking, the deep relationships of this team have set clear
standards for everyone at Costco—standards that focus on innovation, integrity, disci-
pline and, yes, having a bit of fun along the way.
thank you for helping to set the pace, dick. C

OCtOBer HerALds the 25th anniversary of
Costco in Canada. I remember the opening day of the
Burnaby, British Columbia, warehouse as if it were
yesterday. the crowds seemed overwhelming at times,
and the excitement was palpable. With the opening of
a warehouse in Okotoks, Alberta, late this summer
and another in rocky View, Alberta, this fall, Costco
will have grown to 80 warehouses in Canada, and we
are still heartened by the welcome from our new
members and neighbours in the community.
Lorelle Gilpin is Vice President
of Marketing, Costco Wholesale
Canada.
A primary area of Costco’s corporate focus is
giving back to children and families in need in the communities we serve. the story
about Breakfast Clubs of Canada (BCC) on page 59 highlights one example. Wendy
Helfenbaum reports on how Costco employees, along with donations from members,
help children in more than 1,200 schools across Canada. On the same page you can
also read how members helped the Canadian red Cross raise more than $2 million
to help victims of the Haiti earthquake.
Our suppliers often lend a hand as well. during October, you will find Procter &
Gamble products in unique pink packages throughout your local Costco warehouse.
For each item purchased, Procter & Gamble will make a donation to the Canadian
Breast Cancer Foundation.
It is no secret that Costco members love to save money on top-quality, name-brand products. each week, we feature items with additional savings in the warehouse
and online at Costco.ca. You can find out more about these special savings each week
by clicking on the “Get More Out of What You Love” banner and then selecting
“savings.” register on Costco.ca or provide us with your e-mail address next time you
are in the warehouse if you would like to be informed of special offers.
see you in the warehouse or on Costco.ca. C
