LOOKING FOR A new personal computer for
work or school? Here’s the exciting news: Today’s
PCs are leaps and bounds ahead of what came
If it’s time to replace your older, slower and
bulkier machine for one of today’s fast, thin and
more versatile devices, here’s a look at what’s new
and exciting in PCs.
Newer laptops are incredibly thin and light,
making them much easier to carry around with
you to and from coffee shops, the office, school,
airplanes and so on. Today’s Windows laptops are
a lot more versatile than past models. Many have
touch screens, so you can use your fingertips
instead of (or in addition to) using the keyboard
and touchpad (or mouse). Some also include a
digital stylus, for those who want to draw, sketch
or write on the screen.
Many laptops are “;-in-;s,” as they can transform from a laptop to a tablet and back again.
Some ;-in-;s are called “convertibles,” as they
convert from laptop mode to tablet by simply
bending back the screen, which is on a ;;;-degree
hinge; this disables the keyboard in favour of
tapping and swiping the screen. Other ;-in-;s are
called “detachables,” as you can completely detach
the screen, which you can then use as a tablet.
When it comes to a stationary desktop computer, today’s PCs are often “all-in-ones”; the
computer is built into the back of the large monitor, so there’s no tower to take up additional space.
Ideal for anywhere in a home—such as a kitchen
counter, a home office or a teenager’s room—many
all-in-ones have a touch screen and they often
come with a wireless keyboard and mouse.
Speed and more
Faster processors, such as ;th Generation
Intel Core processors, give these new PCs blazing
fast speeds, smoother multitasking and much
better battery life than previous laptops. A pro-
cessor, of course, is like the engine that drives
the performance of your computer. Today’s PCs
are like a race car, with the power you want for
work and play.
Laptops also benefit from high-resolution
screens—;;;;p HD or, in some cases, ;K Ultra
HD quality—displaying a lot more clarity and
detail in photos, videos and games. Text is a lot
crisper too, for reading websites, e-books, school
documents and so on.
When it comes to storage, more and more
laptops have a solid-state drive (SSD) instead of
a hard disk drive (HDD), which makes these
laptops thinner, lighter, faster and more energy-efficient. As with the flash memory in your smartphone, SSDs are less prone to damage because
there are no moving parts.
Finally, as an operating system, Windows ;;
is a home run. Microsoft’s latest OS is super easy
to use, reliable and secure, and it supports many
downloadable apps, games and hardware accessories. And with many new PCs, the Windows
Hello feature built into Windows ;; means you
can log onto your device by simply looking at your
Windows ;; also offers multiple ways to
interface with your computer, whether it’s via a
keyboard, touchpad or mouse. These include
using a stylus on the screen (aka “inking”) for
greater precision, or your fingertips on a touch
screen. You can also use your voice with the
Cortana personal assistant. The more you use
Cortana, the more personalized your experience
will be. To get started, tap or click the little
microphone icon in the search box near the
bottom of your screen. From there, you can ask
a question or give a command, or you can type
in a few words, if you prefer.
Between new form factors, faster processing
speeds, long battery life and Windows ;;, there’s
never been a better time to pick up a new PC. C
