The Costco Connection
Costco.ca and Costco warehouses carry
conventional and synthetic oil. Warehouses carry auto and marine batteries.
Remove all jewellery, and wear long sleeves
and gloves to protect your hands and arms
from battery acid.
• Have your battery and electrical system professionally tested every three to six
months and especially before heading out
on a trip. Check with your local auto shop
or parts store; many will perform the test
• Do a visual inspection to see if the
battery case is bulging, cracked or leaking. If it is, it’s time to replace it.
• Clean up the battery connections by
removing any corrosion, lead oxidation,
dust or moisture from the top of the battery
with a scouring pad or wire brush. Be sure
to brush the corrosion away from you.
• If your battery has removable filler
caps, open the caps and check the water
level in each cell. Make sure the plates are
covered by the fluid inside. This prevents
weakening of your battery and increases
its possible service life.
• If the water level is low, add water
(don’t use tap water; instead use distilled or
de-ionized water) until the plates are covered by at least 1. 25 centimetres (½ inch).
• Avoid overfilling, especially in hot
weather, because the heat can cause the solution inside to expand and overflow.—WF
NOT ALL TIRES are created equal. Premium tires, such as the Pirelli ICE ZEROTM, feature superior rubber compounds and better belt
packages beneath the black exterior that enhance
their safety, longevity and performance.
The Pirelli ICE ZERO is the ideal tire if
you drive in extreme weather conditions
because it features a directional tread pattern
that increases its grip on all surfaces. Its high
sipe density (sipes are small slits in the tread
designed to improve traction on wet and icy
roads) in the central area of the tire increases grip in the snow and
removes water film generated from ice on the road. The tire’s new 3D
sipe technology keeps the tread stable, even at higher speeds. The new
tread pattern spreads air pressure uniformly for better traction and
This line of tires, available for 14- through 19-inch rims and
designed for medium-size cars, premium sedans and SUVs, also features Run Flat technology. Run Flat technology means that if your tire
is punctured, even in pouring rain, you can continue safely driving at
speeds of up to 80 kilometres per hour for 80 kilometres. This distance is often enough to get drivers home or to a garage or somewhere safe to install the spare tire. I really love this technology when
I think of young or inexperienced drivers on the road.
What you’ll love most about the Pirelli ICE ZERO tires, when you
check them out at your local Costco, is the value. You’ll find these
tires at a real savings compared with the prices charged by our nearest

MOST COSTCO members know that Costco
Tire Centres sell premium tires at incredible value, but did you
know that the Tire
Centres now check
and service the tire
system (TPMS) on
your car to make sure
it’s working perfectly?
We do this because
under-inflated tires reduce a vehicle’s handling and braking efficiency and cause premature tire wear and poor fuel economy.
Hundreds of traffic fatalities are caused each
year by tire-related problems. Proper tire
inflation is so important that automakers
began installing a TPMS on certain models as early as 2000.
Depending on the model of vehi-
cle you drive, our certified Costco
Tire Centre technicians can service
and/or replace any or all of your TPMS
sensors and components. TPMS sensors are
generally located in the valve stem attached
to the wheel. Each time your wheels are ser-
viced, the TPMS valve stems should be
reconditioned; our Tire Centres can do so for
a nominal fee by installing “service packs”
that can help extend the life of your sensors.
Costco Tire Centres can also install
TPMS sensors in your winter wheels. Best of
all, you can keep your car’s TPMS in good
working order for a fraction of what car
dealers and competitors charge. C Andy McDonald
