their own reading material, and parents
should pay close attention to what is being
“When you see your child choosing books
from the same author, series or genre over and
over again, this is a clue on what to purchase
for their personal library,” she says. “Also,
encourage relatives to give books as gifts. And
treat a book like it’s a big deal; if you make it
feel special, it will be special to your kids.”
If your child doesn’t take to books imme-
diately, Simpson says to give it time.
“One of my daughters had a hard time
learning to read,” she recalls. “Her second-
grade teacher told me to not worry about it,
saying, ‘She just has a long runway. She will
eventually take off flying.’ ”
To help, Simpson read books to her kids
at night and started with her favourite child-
hood series, Trixie Belden by Julie Campbell.
“I read the first two books, and before I
could get started on the third, my daughter
picked it up and started reading it,” she says.
“Mystery books got her excited to read, and
she has been an avid reader since.” C
