I TRY MY BEST to not repeat myself in this column.
This month, however, thanks to a series of stories
and tips about capturing family history, beginning
on page 65, I feel compelled to underscore some
remarks I made about our movie and videotape
conversion service in September of 2009.

At that time, I referred to the recording and
preservation of family histories on archival CDs as
something that will have “profound” effects on future
generations. Never before have so many of us been
able to see our forebears laughing, running and
interacting with one another. Never before has it been possible to see our ancestors
as the living, breathing individuals they were.

This, I believe, will lead to a greater appreciation of those who have come before
us. We will be better able to understand the idiosyncrasies, glimpse some of the
values and sense some of the challenges our ancestors faced. What if, for example,
you had footage of your great-grandfather as a child helping with the chores on the
family farm that decades ago became a housing subdivision? Or of his parents as
they boarded the ship that brought them to Canada? It would be hard not to have
such images colour your outlook on the world.

By carrying a deeper understanding of our own family history within us, we
may attain a greater respect for the broader pageant of history. And therein lies the
profundity of the little golden archival CDs. It’s worth appreciating at this time of
year when we are making new memories with all generations of our families. C

When I was in junior high school, my locker
partner was a huge fan of Rod Stewart. She owned all
of his albums, went to his concerts and was thrilled
when she found out our home economics teacher was
related to him. Decades later, this venerable rocker
continues to captivate his fans (see story on page 39),
this year with his first Christmas album.

describes in her interview with The Connection what music means to her life.
