And the award goes to…
WITH THE START of the new year, talk in
entertainment circles turns to awards. Costco’s
DVD offerings for January and February may
just win one or more.
Real Steel. A special-effects extravaganza
with heart—think Rocky meets Rock ’Em
Sock ’Em Robots—finds Hugh Jackman as a
former fighter now promoting small-time
fights between machines in a high-tech world.
While the movie is filled with action, at its core
is a father-son story, with Jackman’s Charlie
Kenton bonding with his estranged son. PG
Moneyball. After the 2001 season, when
baseball’s Oakland Athletics faced losing several star players to free agency, general manager Billie Bean had the task of building a
winning team with a less-than-stellar payroll.
With the help of a Yale-educated economics
graduate, Peter Brand, he adopted a revolutionary way to build a baseball team. Based
on the factual book by Michael Lewis, this fun
film features a witty screenplay by Steven
Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin, and engaging
performances from Brad Pitt as Bean and
Jonah Hill as Brand. PG
50/50. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth
Rogen prove a cancer diagnosis doesn’t have
to be just about tears; plenty of laughs can be
had as well. Based on the actual experiences
of writer Will Reiser and his friend Rogen, the
film tells the story of Adam (Gordon-Levitt),
a 27-year-old man diagnosed with cancer,
and his battle against the disease … and the
awkwardness of the people around him. A
must-see for anyone ever touched by the Big
C—probably most, if not all, of us. 14A
The Ides of March. Just in time for the
U.S. presidential campaign season comes a
gripping backstage drama of a candidacy on
the verge of imploding due to a scandal, and a
young, idealistic press secretary caught in the
middle. A veritable master class in screen acting, the film features award-worthy performances from a great ensemble cast, including
George Clooney (who also co-wrote and
produced, as well as directed), Evan Rachel
Wood, Paul Giamatti, Philip Seymour
Hoffman, Marisa Tomei and Jeffrey Wright.
But the film belongs to Ryan Gosling, who
proves he’s one of the most formidable talents
in the business. 14A—Steve Fisher
