I don’t think that
changing one line
is a big deal.

ignited a controversy when it suggested that the
“O Canada” lyrics “True patriot love in all thy sons
command” be changed to something more gender
neutral. The Government ultimately decided to
leave the national anthem alone, but the debate
rages on. Those in favour of changing the lyrics
say the current ones ignore women and a
change would actually be restoring the
national anthem to its original version,
which included women and men. Critics
argue that changing the lyrics on gender
grounds would encourage special interest groups to add their changes.
Canadians value tradition, they add,
and most Canadians don’t want the
lyrics changed. What
do you think?
I think everyone
should be included
in the anthem.

because we’ve had
it for so long; we
need something new
I feel that when it
refers to “sons” it
means all Canadians.
It’s not gender
specific in spirit.
