Deanne Siemens and Joanne Smith
found the power of three freed them
from the kitchen.
(Left to right) Lorelei Thomas,
This meal can be prepared in a slow
cooker or an oven. The sauce is outstanding and can be served over rice or
mashed potatoes. This recipe makes
enough for four meals. Each meal is 4
to 6 servings.
3. 6 kg ( 8 lb.) beef stew meat
1 L ( 4 cups) ketchup
250 mL ( 1 cup) water
4 packets ( 45 mL/3 Tbsp. per packet)
onion soup mix
250 mL ( 1 cup) brown sugar
30 mL ( 2 Tbsp.) prepared mustard
250 mL ( 1 cup) vinegar
2 L ( 8 cups) diced celery
Divide stew meat equally among 4
large ( 3. 7 L/1 gallon) zippable plastic
bags. Combine remaining ingredients
and stir until thoroughly mixed.
Distribute evenly among all bags.
Remove air, seal bags and freeze.
When you are ready to use the meal,
thaw one bag in the refrigerator. After
removing contents from the bag, cook
4 to 5 hours on high or 6 to 8 hours on
low in a slow cooker or 1½ hours at
176˚C (350˚F) in an oven.
says Siemens, who has a nursing degree.
In addition to sharing food, the three are
big on sharing their success. One dollar of
each book sale goes to charity: 50 cents to
World Compassion to build homes for widowed Afghani women and 50 cents to Food
for the Hungry to create clean water projects
for Third World villages.
“Getting together with friends started this
whole thing, and it’s still the best part,” says
Thomas, who says the friends are considering a
second book. “Sometimes, as moms and ladies,
we need more opportunities to get together.
Being productive is a big bonus.” C
