LINES HAVE A WAY of thinning as we age,
don’t you think? Not the ones on our faces, of
course. I am thinking of the lines we envision
between ourselves and others, or the lines
between many of the values we hold when
young and the deeper understandings we come
David W. Fuller is Assistant to as we age.
Vice President, Publishing, and Among the many thin lines of which I have
Editor of The Costco Connection. become more aware is the one between being a
perfectionist and striving for perfection.
Our cover subject this month is diving star Alexandre Despatie, a self-described perfectionist. I wonder, however, if Despatie is not more of a striver
for perfection. The distinction has something to do with basic logic, although I
do not believe it is merely semantic. Logically, a perfectionist has little incentive
to continue to play a sport, ply a craft, paint pictures. If the ultimate has been
achieved, maintaining performance at that level is anticlimactic.
More realistically, perfection should be viewed as an unattainable goal. We
should believe that one more splash of paint on the painting, one more apt word
in the essay, one more quarter twist in the dive could bring us closer to perfection.
This thin line between striving for and insisting upon perfection is important,
because it also delineates the boundary between frenetic, purposeless achievement
and the more forgiving desire simply to constantly improve. Perfection speaks to
the end; striving for perfection speaks to the process. Whether it is in sports, business or our personal lives, the enjoyment—and improvement—of the process
along the way surely should be enough of a challenge for any of us. C

SUMMER IS FINALLY here, and I for one am
looking forward to a few lazy days at the lake.
However, as this is the back-to-school issue of
The Connection, I am reminded of how brief
summer is.
On a related note, don’t forget to enter your “best shot” in the 2007 Costco
Photo Contest, beginning July 1. This year you can send in your entry by mail or
on-line at www.costco.ca.
There is no time like the present to stock up on the many school supplies that
your kids will need for the coming year. The Back to School Collection features
the newest and coolest items for all ages. Be sure to look for the Summer Savings
coupons, offered each week at your local Costco, and save on backpacks, portable
hard drives, paper shredders and mini fridges for the student on campus, and
quick pick up-and-go lunch and dinner items for the busy teenager.
If you’re looking at a new monitor for your youngster (or for yourself), our
tech columnist, Marc Saltzman, offers tips, and you can find out about the great
warranties and service on monitors offered by Hewlett-Packard on page 55.
Finally, I would once again like to applaud the generosity of Costco members
and Costco staff across Canada who contributed time, energy and dollars to the
2007 Children’s Miracle Network campaign. We surpassed our contributions of
last year, and achieved a record level of more than $3.7 million! When you’ve
helped a child, you can’t help but feel good.
See you in the warehouse or on www.costco.ca! C
